Policy Assignment

I found some interesting "policies" in my school district regarding the use of electronic devices allowed to be used by students, i.e, they are not allowed to be used in school. However, many teachers in my school allow students to use IPod's, MP3 players, take pictures with their cell phones, and to use the cell phone as long as the student has finished their work. I was wondering what your thoughts are on this issue and if you see similar activities in your building.

  1. I agree with what you are seeing. Problem is - if there is a policy to not use them or have them, then the teachers have to follow along with the policy as well - otherwise, the kids will ignore the policy.

PCHS had a real problem 2 years ago and the Board made it an issue, so the school administration got behind the policy (imagine that) and really stressed it with the kids. AND guess what, the kids stopped texting in the middle of class and followed the policy.

I think it is OK to use the devices if there is an educational reason. AND if there is, then there should be a policy allowing the device for that purpose. It should not be something where we set the policy aside for this instance.

  2. I am at the high school and if a teacher sees a cell phone, they take it away and the parent has to come and get it the next day. I saw one taken away yesterday. The students are really good at hiding cell phone usage. The teachers are also good at seeing the usage.
